What's in an NBN pit and pipe design package
What you receive from us, what you upload to NBN, what your contractor builds from, and what is not included.
Reviewed 14 October 2026
In short: you receive a pit and pipe design drawing as a PDF ready to upload to the nbn New Developments portal, plus the matching AutoCAD (DWG) file, and the as-built design after construction. It shows every pit, conduit, road crossing and service drop, with lot numbers and a premises count that match your application. Each issue carries a revision letter and date, one client revision is included, and we action NBN's review comments at no extra charge.
The drawing
The core of the package is a scaled plan of your development showing NBN's network as it will be built:
- Every new pit, with its NBN pit type and location relative to lot boundaries and kerbs
- Distribution and local network conduit routes along each street, with sizes (P100, P50) and lengths
- Road crossings and lateral conduits
- A P20 service drop to each SDU lot, or the lead-in to each MDU building or common property
- The connection point to NBN's existing network, or to an earlier stage of your development
- Existing roads, poles, transformers and telecommunications pits that affect the layout
- Lot numbers, street names and the total premises count
- A legend, north point, scale, title block, revision letter and date
File formats
Every design is issued as a PDF and an AutoCAD DWG. The PDF is the file NBN reviews for small developments of up to 20 premises. For larger developments and for MDU pathway designs, NBN strongly advises using its AutoCAD drafting tool, and we prepare the DWG to suit. Your civil contractor can drop the DWG straight into their own drawings.
As-builts
As-built designs are included. Once your contractor has built the works, send us their records of any changes from the design, such as moved pits or different conduit lengths. We update the design to match what was built, ready for you to upload with the Notice of Practical Completion.
Revisions
Each issue of the design carries a revision letter: A for the first issue, then B, C and so on. One revision requested by you is included in the price, for example after your engineer moves a driveway. If NBN raises comments on the design during its review, we action them at no extra charge, unless they come from changes to your development.
What you do with it
- Upload the PDF, and DWG if required, to the nbn New Developments portal under your developer account.
- Send any NBN comments to us. We revise and reissue.
- Once NBN accepts the design, give it to your civil or telecommunications contractor to build.
- After construction, send us your contractor's records of what was built. We prepare the as-built design for you to submit with the Notice of Practical Completion.
The NBN process guide explains each stage.
What is not included
- NBN's fees and charges
- Supply or installation of pits, conduit, cables or fibre
- Construction, site works and surveying
- Electrical design, and design of gas, water or other services
